More than 100,000 people will take in the beauty of our seaside city while browsing through unique booths, indulging in delectable eats and enjoying family entertainment when the largest one-day street faire in the nation returns next month.

Each year, the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce hosts the faire in May and November. Now in its 39th year, the free event has grown to be so popular that it not only continually attracts people from all over Southern California, but also from other states. Some visitors even plan their vacations around the bi-annual event.

“The reason so many people return to the faire every year is that they can count on finding quality items to purchase because of the wide variety of vendors,” said Ted Owen, president and chief executive officer of the Carlsbad Chamber. “You name it and it’s for sale at the faire.”

Just like at past faires, over 900 vendors will sell everything fathomable, including clothes, accessories, plants, household products, art, antiques and home decor. The international food court will once again feature more than 50 booths serving everything from Thai to Hawaiian cuisine. The children’s area will entertain youngsters with games, a super slide, a bounce house, a rock climbing wall, face painting and arts and crafts.

The Rotary Club of Carlsbad’s beer and wine garden will entertain fairgoers with a large screen TV and live bands. The Kiwanis Club of Carlsbad will continue its more than 25-year tradition of hosting a pancake breakfast at the Carlsbad railroad depot. The meal, which includes pancakes, sausage, coffee and juice, will be served between 7 a.m. and noon.

Grand Avenue from Carlsbad Boulevard to Jefferson Street, and all of the cross streets in between, will be closed for the event. To make parking more convenient, complimentary shuttles will run to and from the faire. Shuttles will pick up and drop off passengers at the Poinsettia Coaster Station and the northwest corner of Sears at Westfield Plaza Camino Real.

For more information on becoming a vendor in the future, call (760) 945.9288.

Founded in 1999, the William D. Cannon Art Gallery’s mission is to promote, interpret and present to the community the art of emerging, mid-career and established artists from culturally diverse Southern California and to showcase the cultural creativity and art from other parts of the world. The curatorial focus of the gallery includes painting, sculpture, photography, print-making, mixed-media, folk art, design and installation works.

Over the past nine years, the William D. Cannon Art Gallery Juried Exhibitions have become an important showcase for the work of both emerging and mid-career artists in San Diego. Open to artists who live, work or have a studio in San Diego County, guest jurors are always professionals in the visual arts. Past jurors have included visual artists, museum directors and curators, commercial gallery owners, and university gallery directors and art professors.

New Village Arts, already known as the artistic heart of the Carlsbad Village for its risk taking, award-winning professional theatre, has expanded its cultural influence by opening The Foundry as a space for working artists.

The Art Foundry will house a dozen on-site artists creating and displaying their work in private, individual work studios ranging from large spaces suitable for sculpture, pottery, textiles, glass art and painters working on very large canvases, to cozy hideaways ideal for watercolorists and jewelers. In addition to the studio artists’ areas, locker spaces will be available so that additional artists can store their materials and make use of the common workspaces in the studio, move out to the sidewalk, or even take their work down to the beach – whatever inspires them that day.

The public is welcome to wander through the foundry at any time and interact with the Resident artists, see the progress each artist is making on their work or even purchase an original work of art created on site.

Concerts take place on Friday evenings, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., and begin in late June and run through the summer. The schedule of parks and bands is usually posted on the website by mid-May.

Gregg “Viz” Visintainer is a self-taught artist and is the youngest of three boys. He was born on February 29, 1984 in San Jose, CA. He always loved to draw as kid, but never thought he could pursue art as a career until recently. His unique style of drawing began when he was 15 years old, in high school. During class instead of listening and taking notes he was doodling. Drawing was his way to pass time in school and express how he felt.

Viz Art Ink is hand drawn, using pen and ink. From afar, there is a main image but up-close you will find hidden pictures, words, messages and a lot of meaning that relates to each theme. It takes Gregg on average about 60-80 hours to complete an art piece. His style has gained recognition throughout Southern California and in the action sports industry. In the last three years he has worked with Element Skateboards, Volcom, DC Shoes, Dregs Skateboards, Skinit, Grateful Dead, Falken Tires, Disney and others.

In January of 2013 he opened his own gallery in Carlsbad, CA. His gallery showcases Viz Art Ink and other local artists. Viz’s goal is to share his art and story with as many people as possible. He speaks at different events and schools throughout California to motivate and inspire the youth.
